NABVETS PDX Chapter News:"100 Lives Initiative" ‘Making an impact, 100
Lives at a time…’ The NABVETS Portland Chapter is working on solutions to the many issues facing the members of our community. To support these efforts we have launched the "100 Lives Initiative" that will focus on specific areas and use the resources of both NABVETS Portland and the community to help create a positive impact on the lives of the Oregon and Washington residents. The first outreach effort was focused on the very high unemployment rate and lack of available resources for the residents in the targeted area. At the successful 2009 Job and Community Resource Fair event held in Beaverton, Oregon; NABVETS Portland partnered with representatives from Federal, State, National and Local employers as well as valuable Community Service Organizations; all working to assist Oregon and Washington jobseekers in their search for new or enhanced career opportunities. Job seekers and working professionals seeking new opportunities were exposed to well over 100 jobs, as well as important community service agencies during the event. Attendees took advantage of the chance to network with the employers, community service and veteran service organizations and other professionals throughout the day. The event was very well received and care was taken to only have employers on hand who were actively hiring and offering employment to the attendees. Our efforts have received very positive feedback and request for another Job Fair Event to be held soon! Our next steps in the "100 Lives Initiative" will focus on the issues of domestic violence, a blood drive, homelessness, food and clothing assistance and other necessary outreach programs that can help to make the lives of our fellow citizens easier.
